Advertising Electives FAQ
BOOKMARK THIS PAGE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE
How many electives do I need to take?
4
Do they have to be on the list in DegreeWorks?
No.
Why not?
When the advertising major was created, it was supposed to be in conjunction with other departments. We have found over time that classes are not offered consistently, so we needed to provide other alternatives.
What electives can I take?
You can take any class (200-level or above) that is related to advertising. For example, Economics now offers BUS 243 — Marketing, and will be offering it every semester. Other departments sometimes offer classes in consumer behavior or design classes for advertising. BE AWARE: These classes are likely to have prerequisites, so plan accordingly, and no, we cannot waive prerequisites from other departments.
NOTE: THESE CLASSES MUST BE APPROVED AHEAD OF TIME BY THE ADVERTISING DIRECTOR.
I registered for a class after I got it approved, and it’s still not showing up on DegreeWorks. Why not?
DegreeWorks only recognizes classes that have been approved by the State as electives. It will not automatically appear in the major when you sign up for it.
Here’s the process:
Find an advertising or marketing-related course.
Get approval from the advertising director (Prof. Einstein)
Once you have started taking the class and know you will stick with it (2-3 weeks into the semester), email Prof. Einstein with the name of the course that was approved and let them know we had agreed that it would be counted toward the major.
I will then put the paperwork in with the registrar, and within a week you will see the changes in DegreeWorks.
Be sure to include your QC ID on this and all correspondence related to advising.
What electives can I take in Media Studies?
The classes listed in DegreeWorks are:
MEDST 222 Introduction to Public Relations
MEDST 262 Political Economy of the Media
MEDST 264 The Business of Media
MEDST 266 Podcasting
MEDST 350, 350W Propaganda
MEDST 357 Media Law and Ethics
MEDST 281 (Variable Topics class, can be taken more than once)
Electives outside of Media Studies
DATA 205 Statistics
SOC 765 Social Media Marketing Analytics
SOC 235 Data and Society
SOC 353 Ethnography
ECON 245 Economics of Technology, Media & Telecommunications
Can any class in Media Studies count as an elective in the Advertising major?
No.
Can you explain 281 or 381 classes?
When the department tries out new courses, it is not immediately given an official course number. Instead, it is designated as a 281 (or 381) course. This is why you will see several courses with the same number almost every semester.
These classes are known as VT, or variable topics, classes, and they can be taken more than once because the class is not the same each time.
How do I learn about what electives are going to be offered in the upcoming semester?
Attend the mandatory meeting. Every semester, I provide you with a list of what electives will be offered weeks in advance of registration. This year, I also provided the list online. (See the post immediately before this.)
